Biography
Léo Kupper is a pioneer of Belgian electronic music, also recognized internationally. As a composer, he goes by the idea that the framework must be generous and “communicate waves of happy resonance for others”. As a poet and theoretician of sound, he has several collections of published poetry (Aventures sonores et musicales), he worked with the late composer, Henri Pousseur, in the first electronic music studio in Belgium. He is, since the 60s, the founder and director of the “Research and Electronic Audit Structures Studio” in Brussels.
During the next decade, he discovered music of the Iranian master Hussein Malek and became passionate about his instrument, the santour, of which he is one of the Western virtuosos. Close to nature, from where he draws his inspiration, Leo Kupper realizes important works of sound architecture. He creates a “sound jungle” composed of a system of cupolas (presented at the Venice Biennale) in which people who speak are placed, and who speak.
In 2019, Leo Kupper, still active, has released a selection of these works composed in the last two decades (Works on the Megadisc label).
