Hertziana (a phonography of sorrow)

One might think that grief makes the air vibrate with a particular frequency, low, serious, evolving slowly despite violent explosions of white noise. The tones of sorrow travel far, they avoid obstacles and borders. HIts acoustic energy touches the hearts, resonates in the other bodies, builds bridges of empathy. One could also imagine a giant microphone that flies over the earth and captures these frequencies. With these premises we compose a hertzian drift that causes mental images of a planet surrounded by an atmosphere of residual voices and songs, the sound traces of painful events.

Based on a composition for Wim Vandekeybus’ dance performance Mockumentary of a Contemporary Savior.

Workshop Sound design - moving image

The idea is, for the participants, to acquire a certain knowledge of sound language, being able to name the sounds, describe them in terms of perception, differentiate between the various types of listening -causal, reduced, figurative – in order to help to design a sound universe appropriate for each work. Electroacoustic music has developed very appropriate tools for sound creation. In this introductory workshop, participants under the direction of composer Charo Calvo use these digital writing techniques and explore the possibilities of creating new sounds.

The goal, ultimately, is to realize the sound design of a short film in a personal and coherent way, each in their own way, to define their signature.

Biography

After a career as a dancer in Belgium with the contemporary dance company Ultima Vez, Charo Calvo began her studies in Electroacoustic Composition with Annette Vande Gorne at the Mons Conservatory, where she now teaches Applied Composition to Media in the Electroacoustic section. As a composer and sound designer she has made the soundtrack of numerous dance, theater, film, video and audiovisual installations broadcast internationally, as well as acousmatic pieces. Her compositions are always made with a desire for experimentation, where the search for a personal language is fundamental and the dramaturgy of sound is each time reinvented.
